Tobacco Education for Teachers

3 Semester Units

This course is designed to provide each participant with a working knowledge and understanding of the school’s role and interaction with students, parents and the community in the prevention and intervention of tobacco abuse. Emphasis will be placed on current tobacco use issues, and how tobacco use affects the entire family. A variety of teaching strategies will be utilized for teaching K through 12th grade. Participates will be able to evaluate media to be used appropriated in the tobacco education curriculum.

Develop a mini teaching unit on tobacco use prevention for classroom use for the grade level you teach or plan to teach.

Prepare a complete five day unit on tobacco use prevention including supporting materials and/or references which you would use. The unit should be grade level appropriate. If you choose to do a high school unit it should be integrated into the existing curriculum unless it is for a health class. Grade level appropriateness, content and realistic amounts of material to be covered will be important in determining your grade.
